Small toughened safety glass windows in discs squares
and shapes for scientific, meter,
instrumentation and industrial applications. Specialist toughened
glass heat treated windows aremade tothe finished sizes then
pre-stressing the glass by thermal toughening to BS standards.
Toughened glass is produced by subjecting annealed
glass to a process of heating and rapid cooling which produces
high compression in the surface and compensating tension in
the centre.
When toughening it does not alter the light transmission
and solar radiant heat properties of the glass. The properties
of the toughened product are identical to those of the annealed
glass used.
The mechanical strength can be increased to as much
as four to five times that for its equivalent thickness of
annealed glass.
The thermal strength greatly increases resistance
to both sudden temperature changes and temperature differentials
up to 250ºC.
Thickness ranges from 1mm (chemical toughening) to
25mm thick generally in float glass and borosilicate glasses.
